Game Summary

video source: Nintendo of America, 2024

Suika Game is a puzzle game involving 11 different types of fruit. The fruit is dropped along a horizontal axis into a box; when two of the same fruits touch, they evolve into a new fruit. The idea is to drop the fruit along the axis so it will fall onto (or as close as possible to) its twin, scoring points by leveling up to a new fruit and taking less space in the box. Play continues until the box of fruit overflows at the top.

With Suika Game Summer Holiday, new game art has been added for players to customize the box, background, small details on the fruit, and the “Poppy” character that drops the fruit. Essential gameplay remains the same.

Developer Background

Aladdin X is a Japanese technology company based in Tokyo. They primarily produce projectors for home entertainment. Suika Game and related DLCs are the only video games Aladdin X has developed (Suika Game, 2024).

Critical Evaluation

My family loves Suika Game, and I was excited to see they released their first expansion pack this summer. The DLC was easy enough to order from the Nintendo eShop, but finding the new content in the game after purchase was not very intuitive; I realized later that screenshots on the product page give some basic instruction for that.

The changes with the Summer Holiday DLC are cute, but not as extensive as I imagined or as the trailer video made them seem. Still, it’s always fun to breath new life into a game you enjoy, and Suika Game remains a fun, relaxing puzzle game for all ages.

Creative Use for a Library Program

Suika Game is regularly compared to the puzzle game Tetris. A library could run a program for youth where they play a real-world game of Tetris, racing to stack layers of shaped blocks or items.

Speed Round Talk

Enjoy new game art and fun in the sun with your favorite fruits as Suika Game goes on a Summer Holiday!

Potential Challenge Issues and Defense Preparation

I would not anticipate any potential challenges to this video game.

Reason for Inclusion

The original Suika Game is one of the best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch with over 5 million downloads (Suika Game, 2024); my own teenager loves it and plays with friends. DLCs like Suika Game Summer Holiday are popular for allowing players to enjoy old games in a new way, making this a worthwhile addition to this collection for teens.
