I’m fascinated by what teens consume for entertainment. No matter the format, materials for teens seem infused with an overall sense of yearning or seeking. And for what? For understanding, for belonging, for voice, for justice, for power, for first love, for freedom, for self—for something that feels just out of reach but is attainable by allowing some tiny spark inside to ignite. Teens consume entertainment that allows them to see the world, rearrange it, and then redefine it. I’ve always been drawn to YA materials, and I think it’s because I find more courage in them than a lot of content created for adults.
